It all started with my Sunday night routine of sitting in front of the television to watch Steve and Terri Irwin's wildlife exploits in "The Crocodile Hunter" on Animal Planet. One episode was dedicated to their visit to the Galápagos Islands, which got the gears churning. The Galápagos always seemed like one of those mystical places of old to me, like Krakatoa, or Pompeii. In any case, I didn't realize until this program that the islands were open to visitors. My wife and I needed an adventure; she had never been out of North America, and I've only been off the continent once. Our only real trip together had been to Washington DC.
Preparing for the trip was an adventure in itself. We had to come up with a quick-drying, light travel wardrobe, packing for both cool and hot weather, since we decided to visit the Amazon as well. I used the trip as an excuse to upgrade my camera equipment, and buy a camcorder. At 3am September 1, 1999, we were packed and ready to go. Just enough time to catch four hours sleep before we had to leave for the airport. A vacation just doesn't seem to be the same for us if we start it properly rested.
