Thanks to very specific instructions from Timothy (ttilghman) on the Triumph Bonneville Delphi Forum, this went pretty smoothly:
So here is what I did for the aftermarket tach on an '01:
-lighting wires (2) spliced into the lighting wires on the OEM speedo.
-positive and ground wires spliced into the parking light wire in the
headlight (any circut that turns on with the key will do)
-tach/ignition signal wire, fitted with a clip from the OEM blinkers,
patched into the ignition module under the seat. The tach signal is in
the third socket from the right on the top of two rows. (the 0 in the grid
of X's below when viewed from behind the bike)

There is a rubber plug that sits in there now and needs to be removed. Also, I found it a help to pull the entire plug off and remove the cover plate, thread the tach signal wire all the way through, attach the female clip and pull it back into place. All this should become clear once you are at the bike.
This last bit was the most troublesome. I think some here have found the proper clip to fit into the plug but I'm not sure where. Like I mentioned. I extracted the female clip from the OEM turnsignals which fit in just perfectly, but it's fussy work to cut the clip out of it's plastic housing, remove the wire carefully and then clip it on to the tach signal wire.
good luck- tt
The rusty (?) innards of my headlight. I spliced the power, and ground into the parking
light wire. Grabbed the tach illumination wire from the speedometer. And finally, routed
the coil signal from the seat (taping it along the wiring harness). A 4 pin molex
connector hooks it to the tach.
The provided tach mount bracket (it came with a handlebar mount kit) has basically enough
clearance to hook up to the back to the instrument lights. Should be strong enough.
